FEATURES: Tiny white flowers hanging in loose clusters in narrow branched racemes atop leafy stems. Flowers: Calyx about 1/4" (6 mm) wide, with 5 lobes attached to a pale green, cup-like base about 1/16" (2 mm) long, upper lobelargest; petals 5. There are two forms of this flower. If the leaves are cut to the top of the leafstalk, this is the variety trifoliata; if the leaves are lobed but not cut, then this is the variety unifoliata.
LEAVES: This plant produces mainly basal leaves with long stalks and 3 leaflets that are irregularly lobed, coarsely toothed, and sparsely hairy. The stem leaves are reduced in size with shorter stalks. The leaves are 0.5 to 3 inches (1.5 to 8 cm) in length and up to 5 inches (12 cm) in width.
FRUITS: Capsules with a small number of seeds open by splitting between the small upper valve and the larger lower valve. The seeds are shiny, smooth, and black in color.
