Winter Fun in The Inland NWHi Readers, With winter on its way, I thought I’d write you all about winter activities, precautions, and the fun to be had. For those who dislike the winter season, there is a reason to embrace it. I suppose you can stay at home and complain about the cold, the snow, and going outdoors. But that is counter productive to living our lives. I hope to show you in this newsletter, how you can enjoy, and just maybe like winter for the first time. Let’s start with ACTIVITIES. SNOWSHOEING AND WINTER HIKING Yes, snowshoeing is a lot of work. But that work relates to warmth from within. Keep in mind, you don’t have to go to the top of a mountain or a high country lake. In Spokane County, you have an incredible park system. It’s called the Spokane County Conservation Futures Program. Navigate to the site’s page: Spokane County Conservation Futures to learn about 17 easy areas to snowshoe in. They are also great non winter parks to hike, and they only take up to four hours to complete. Or less if you want to keep warm walking faster. Under HIKE…WASHINGTON…WASHINGTON SCABLANDS, you will find places to snowshoe west of Spokane. The cool thing about winter hikes or snowshoes in the Scabs, is they are usually warmer then around Spokane or North Idaho. Especially in late March and early April. We carry our hiking gear in the car when we go skiing. If the conditions are poor on the mountain it’s a short distance to areas that will allow you to get out into nature easily. The catch to winter activities is very simple. Have the right gear, and all you don’t like about winter activities, is under your control. Under MORE….RESOURCES are sections called MEDICAL INFO, TRAIL ETIQUETTE AND SKILLS, and HINTS. In these sections, I explain a lot of what you need to know, and clothing that will allow you to be warm on a cold day. The best base layer to stay warm, is to buy Indera Two-Layer Performance polypro. I have worn them skiing for over three decades, and they are the best. They only cost $22 dollars per piece. Please read up on these sections to help you get started. Don’t forget to take a thermos of your favorite hot drink (non-alcohol, please). Please don’t discount winter because it’s cold outside. The winter wonderland views you get to experience, will warm your heart, and soul.
