At one time or another, we all get wet in the mountains. Whether you are hiking, climbing, paddling, or enjoying winter sports, we all need to waterproof our outer layers. Detergents that are not powdered, may contain additives that may affect your garments water proofing abilities. I wash my garment, then rewash the garment WITHOUT any laundry soap. While the garment is still wet, I spray it with a PFAS FREE Durable Water Resistant spray. Make sure you cover your garment thoroughly. And then spray areas again like shoulders, back, seat, and legs or arms. Then the garment goes in the dryer for at least 30 minute. If it’s not thoroughly dry, hang and let dry. Just don’t spray and go. The DWR’s need to blend with the material. As the ski or hiking season progresses, you may have to retreat your garments. Respray it wet or dry, and use your dryer to “cure” the garment. Products that do not contain PFAS are Durable Water Resistant sprays are listed below: Nikwax DWR GEARAID DWR GRANGER DWR All these manufacturers make a special Wash. If you don’t have the Arm & Hammer laundry soap, consider one of the above brands. However, Arm & Hammer cost a fraction of the above brands. A word about these pump spray applicators… They are difficult to spray on evenly. What I do, is spray my garments lightly twice. Then while wearing a plastic glove, I rub the DWR into the cloth, before drying them. That way, I know it’s spread evenly. If you buy all the Arm & Hammer and the DWR sprays above now, you can get a jump on late Fall early Winter physical training, and ski season. Years ago, I wrote this……. Spring Summer And Fall as nice as they are are simply fillers between Ski Seasons. Always be prepared, and have the necessary items and most of all, the knowledge to survive the night.
