CAMP FIRE ETIQUETTE
Recently I hiked into Beehive Lake in the American Selkirks. The lake is beautiful with all sizes of giant white granite blocks filling the glacier cirque. On the east shore line, up 30 feet off the water, are splendid camp sites. But what I discovered at one of them, irked me no end. The above image is a Krummholz Form of a Sub-Alpine Fir. They are the unusual forms of the usual Sub-Alpine Fir you see all over our region. According to https://www.treespnw.com, these small fir trees can be a few hundred years old when they are waist to chest high. If you are a skier, and have ever snagged your jacket on a tree that does not give, you know this incredible tree. Not only did someone cut this tree for firewood, they massacred it with a hatchet. This behavior when you are in Nature, is unacceptable. There is zero need to ravage the forest for firewood. There is endless dead wood all around the lake. PLEASE use good ethics when you visit our magnificent forests. Trees make oxygen from CO2. We, in part need oxygen to live. Our forests are a vital resource. We need to save what we have. Ps....The next time you are in a Winco Store, buy a couple of heavy duty grocery bags. They only weigh 6 grams and ca hold 1.5 gallons of water. making them a great water bag for putting out your camp fires. Chic David InlandNWRoutes.com
