BLOG #77   HOME PAGE CLEAN UP AND MORE

10/28/2024

I visited David last week to discuss some ideas we both had for our website.

In the process of cleaning up our HOME PAGE, we decided to move our FOREST ALERTS to the individual trip write ups.
The reason we decided to move this very important info to the write ups, is so you can check for any kind of issues, trying to get to the trailheads.

Years ago, a friend and I were driving up to hike into Long Mountain Lake & Peak.
As we drove the frontage road of the American Selkirks, we came up to a bridge that was being replaced.
Our turnoff was about 300’ past the bridge work, we intended to drive up.
We eventually had to drive back to Bonners Ferry and drove up 95 to near the Canadian border, to Copeland, and down to our forest road.
All this took about an extra hour or so to reach the trailhead.

It was on that trip that I decided to do two things to our website.

1st…I always advise hikers planning a trip, to call or get online to see if their trip would be affected by any kind of forest closures or delays.
2nd…it is very important that you tell a responsible person your itinerary, your exact route of hiking, and when to notify the local sheriff’s office, if you are overdue or late.
IF YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR DESTINATION, YOU MUST CALL YOUR RESPONSIBLE PERSON TO LET THEM KNOW OF YOUR CHANGES.
IF YOU DON’T, AND ARE LATE OR INJURED, THE SEARCH PARTIES MAY BE LOOKING IN THE WRONG LOCATION FOR YOU.

Both of these are critical in case of an unfortunate accident.

TWO BEAR AIR RESCUE SERVICE

We are very fortunate to have a rescue service close by to get us out of the woods and to an ambulance or hospital.

Two years ago, I was leading a snowshoe (sshoe) next to Stevens Lakes.
One of the participants, slipped and tore her Achilles Tendon off the behind. She could not walk or even stand up.
I called 911, and the Shoshone County Sheriff, dispatched a three person rescue crew to us.

Please keep in mind, it takes hours for a rescue crew to get to the accident site.

Once the Shoshone County S&R leader got to us, the leader called TWO BEAR AIR.

They are stationed out of Kalispell, so it took time for them to get to us.
But when they were hovering above us, I realized my friend was going to get out, without a difficult and complicated rescue.

Altho that was a great help in getting her out, the very best part, is….TWO BEAR AIR is a free rescue service.
It cost my friend ZERO $.
She was air lifted to Lookout Ski Areas parking lot, where an ambulance was waiting.

So the moral to ALL of this is simple.
STUFF HAPPEN IN THE MOUNTAINS.
PLEASE PREPARE FOR ALL UNFORESEEN INCIDENTS.

David and my goal is to provide you with the best knowledge we can.
By doing this, you can plan your trip, or know what’s available to you, before you even put on your boots.

Please check out our RESOURCES, HINTS and MEDICAL INFO  sections for more important information, that everyone NEEDS TO KNOW.

Thank You for reading and using our local website.
Please be safe and learn what we all need to know to have “too much fun in the mountains”.

BLOG #76   TOILET PAPER AND SLOBS IN THE MOUNTAINS

10/21/2024

Picture

AN UNACCEPTABLE  BEHAVIOR IN THE MOUNTAINS
OR FOR THAT MATTER, ANYWHERE

Today I got a text from a friend that was upset about others stupid behavior while on a hike.

"I had to get out of the house so we went and got a cuppa coffee and then decided to take a drive out to Ponderosa State Park. We walked out to an overlook and this was what was there. What is wrong with people? I don’t get it."

MY RESPONSE BACK TO HIM IS BELOW

I’ve been picking up others trash most of my life.
I used to get pissed, but litters are relentless and never ending.

So I just pick up trash and feel good about it.
Every time I’m at any trailhead, I clean them up. And while hiking, I usually have a grocery bag hanging off my pack, with trail trash in it.
It does little good in life to get pissed because others are slobs.
But picking up their trash makes me feel like I made a difference.
You may not know this about me…but I was asked to adopt Stevens Lakes and Lone Lake in 1991.
I accepted on the spot and have done it ever since.

In all of my packs, are 6 or more grocery bags.
They hold the trash I clean up, but this year, I learned that they can prevent whole forests from burning.
Picking up trash is one thing, but knowing that there was three times this year, that I just may have saved our forest, and one of my favorite places to play, I feel good about doing what I do.

Basically, I have gone up to Stevens or Lone Lakes, on average every three weeks, weather permitting and non snow times, to clean up campsites and trailheads.
But it’s also very selfish of me…when I do go up, the exercise I get, is worth the effort.

Get pissed. I don’t blame you.
But move towards feeling good about making a difference for the next  hikers.

A plastic grocery bag holds about 1.5 gallons of water. And they have built in spigots.
But they only last for 3-4 trips before they rip apart.
That’s why I carry a lot of them.

The smoldering fire I tried to extinguish at Upper Glidden Lake, didn’t get dead out. My bag fell apart.
So on my way past Wallace, I stopped at the Shoshone County Sheriffs, to alert them. The girl at the office recognized me from Silver Mt. and said she would contact the Idaho Department of BAD ROADS, Aka Lands.
They dispatched a crew that went up and made sure the campsites fire pits were dead out.

Grocery bags only weight only 6 grams, put 6-8 in your pack.
I also carry 4 nitro gloves to pick up wet stuff.

Once during a trail work party, we came along a spot on the shore of Lower Stevens Lake, where a girl peed in the lake several times, over several days, and left 10+ large Kleenex tissues on the shore.

I made one bag into a glove, that’s why I carry gloves now, and picked it all up. The others on the trail crew were grossed out, but I was happy it’s was dealt with.

The moral of this BLOG is....Be a trail hero. Carry a bunch of grocery bags and help Mother Nature.
Whether you pick up trash or other stuff, it will make you proud that you made it nice for all of us.

Often when I'm in the mountains, I come across others that pick up others trash.
To those who do that...THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Mother Nature is smiling at you.

Thank You for reading our local website.
And thanks for picking up your, and zothers trash.

BLOG #75  TECHNICAL CLOTHING & WATERPROOFING

10/16/2024

TECHNICAL CLOTHING AND WATER PROOFING

At one time or another, we all get wet in the mountains.

Whether you are hiking, climbing, paddling, or enjoying winter sports, we all need to waterproof our outer layers.

But there are hazards to using some products.
Some waterproofing sprays contains PFAS, also known as Forever Chemicals.
Please do your research. I can’t name them, but you can Google products that are not safe to use.

How to Water Proof Your Clothes and other gear.

The way I have been treating my technical gear for decades is below.
You may have other methods, and that okay.
What ever works for you is okay, as long as you know some important facts.

First I wash my gear one by one.
I use powdered Arm & Hammer laundry soap.
Detergents that are not powdered, may contain additives that may affect your garments water proofing  abilities.

I wash my garment, then rewash the garment WITHOUT any laundry soap.

While the garment is still wet, I spray it with a PFAS FREE Durable Water Resistant spray.
Make sure you cover your garment thoroughly. And then spray areas again like shoulders, back, seat, and legs or arms.

Then the garment goes in the dryer for at least 30 minute.
If it’s not thoroughly dry, hang and let dry.
Just don’t spray and go.
The DWR’s need to blend with the material.

As the ski or hiking season progresses, you may have to retreat your garments.
Respray it wet or dry, and use your dryer to “cure” the garment.

Products that do not contain PFAS are Durable Water Resistant sprays are listed below:
Nikwax DWR
GEARAID DWR
GRANGER DWR

All these manufacturers make a special Wash.
If you don’t have the Arm & Hammer laundry soap, consider one of the above brands.
However, Arm & Hammer cost a fraction of the above brands.

A word about these pump spray applicators…
They are difficult to spray on evenly.
What I do, is spray my garments lightly twice.
Then while wearing a plastic glove, I rub the DWR into the cloth, before drying them. That way, I know it’s spread evenly.

If you buy all the Arm & Hammer and the DWR sprays  above now, you can get a jump on late Fall early Winter physical training, and ski season.

Years ago, I wrote this…….

Spring
Summer
And Fall
as nice as they are
are simply fillers between
Ski Seasons.

Always be prepared, and have the necessary items and most of all, the knowledge to survive the night.
Waterproof clothing is a big part staying dry when you need it most.

BLOG #74  OUR EARTH'S WATER

10/3/2024

Hi Readers,
I came across this Bureau of Reclamation on our world's water supply, and decided to sharer it with our readers.

In the world's future, fresh water will be more valuable than gold.

Please conserve our precious water supplies.
When you are in the mountains, PLEASE do your business at least 200 feet from any water source.
Be sure to burry your and your dogs waste 6" deep. I try to cover it after burying it with rocks.
I know its hard to carry out your toilet paper waste, but removing it is best for the environment.

Most of our fresh water flows down hill. We all live down hill from our forest. Hence, it could affect our lives.

Please protect our Earth's precious environments.

Water Facts - Worldwide Water Supply
  • Water covers about 71% of the earth's surface.
  • 326 million cubic miles of water on the planet
  • 97% of the earth's water is found in the oceans (too salty for drinking, growing crops, and most industrial uses except cooling).
  • 320 million cubic miles of water in the oceans
  • 3% of the earth's water is fresh.
  • 2.5% of the earth's fresh water is unavailable: locked up in glaciers, polar ice caps, atmosphere, and soil; highly polluted; or lies too far under the earth's surface to be extracted at an affordable cost.
  • 0.5% of the earth's water is available fresh water.
  • If the world's water supply were only 100 liters (26 gallons), our usable water supply of fresh water would be only about 0.003 liter (one-half teaspoon).
  • In actuality, that amounts to an average of 8.4 million liters (2.2 million gallons) for each person on earth.
  • This supply is continually collected, purified, and distributed in the natural hydrologic (water) cycle.

  • All of the water on the planet would fill less than one cup.
  • Only 0.03% of one cup is in rivers and fresh water lakes.
  • Slightly more than one drop of water would fill all the rivers and lakes.

Sources of Fresh Water
  • Groundwater - water which infiltrates into the ground through porous materials deeper into the earth. It fills pores and fractures in layers of underground rock called aquifers. Some of this water lies too far under the earth's surface to be extracted at an affordable cost.
  • Surface-water runoff - precipitation that does not infiltrate into the ground or return to the atmosphere: streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and reservoirs.
  • Snow that is 4 inches (10cm) deep contains about the same amount of water as 1/3 inch (1 cm) of rain.
Water Use in the U.S.
  • 8% domestic use
  • 33% agriculture
  • 59% industry
  • Over 600 gallons per day per person in the U.S. is being diverted for farm irrigation and livestock use from natural aquatic sources.
  • More than half the people in the U.S. get their water from groundwater.
Measures of Water Use
  • Water withdrawal - taking water from groundwater or surface-water source and transporting it to a place of use.
  • Water consumption - water that has been withdrawn and is not available for reuse in the area from which it is withdrawn.
  • In the U.S. about three-fourths of the fresh water withdrawn each year comes from rivers, lakes and reservoirs; one-fourth comes from groundwater aquifers.
  • 80% of water withdrawn in the U.S. is used for cooling electric power plants and for irrigation.

Garden Water Use
  • Americans use about 1/3 more water in the summer than they do the rest of the year because they're watering their lawns.
  • There are about 10 million acres of lawn in the U.S., which requires 270 billion gallons of water every week. That's enough to give every person in the world a shower for four days in a row.
